Teachers Donate Sick Days to Help Robert Goodman Fight Cancer

For more than two decades, Robert Goodman dedicated his life to teaching history at Palm Beach Gardens Community High School in Florida. In April 2018, however, his own life took an unexpected turn when doctors diagnosed him with stage III colon cancer.

After undergoing surgery on 4 May 2018, Goodman began chemotherapy several times a week. While he focused on fighting the disease, another challenge quickly emerged—he was running out of paid sick leave.

A Difficult Battle

As the treatments continued, Goodman used all 38 of his accumulated sick days. However, he still needed about 20 additional days to qualify for the Palm Beach County School District’s catastrophic leave programme, which would allow him to continue receiving his salary while recovering.

Without enough leave, he faced a heartbreaking choice: return to the classroom while undergoing chemotherapy or lose his income at a time when his family needed it most.

A Simple Request for Help

On 23 July 2018, while sitting in a chemotherapy chair at the Tomsich Health and Medical Center, Goodman posted a photo of himself on Facebook.

In the post, he explained his situation and politely asked fellow school employees if anyone could donate a few unused sick days. He hoped to receive just enough to qualify for the catastrophic leave programme.

What happened next was far beyond anything he expected.

An Incredible Act of Kindness

Within just four days, teachers, administrators, cafeteria workers, and other school district employees came together to support their colleague.

Instead of donating the 20 days he needed, they donated an astonishing 75 sick days. The generous donations gave Goodman enough paid leave to cover an entire semester, allowing him to continue his treatment without worrying about returning to work too soon or losing his salary.

Goodman later said he was overwhelmed by the kindness shown to him. Although he felt humbled by the generosity, he was deeply grateful that so many people were willing to help.

Robert Goodman’s story quickly spread across the United States, inspiring countless people with its message of compassion and community.

He also used his experience to encourage others not to ignore routine health screenings, reminding people that early detection can make a life-saving difference.
