Li Meizhen’s Marathon Finish Inspired Millions

Chinese marathon runner Li Meizhen earned international attention after completing the 2024 Hengshui Lake Marathon despite unexpectedly starting her menstrual period during the race. Photos of blood running down her legs quickly spread across social media, but instead of embarrassment, many people saw the images as a powerful example of determination and resilience. 

A Race That Went Viral

The marathon took place on 22 September 2024 in Hengshui, China, attracting around 20,000 runners. According to reports, Li’s period began with about 8 kilometres remaining in the 42.195-kilometre race. Rather than stopping or withdrawing, she continued running at a competitive pace until she crossed the finish line. 

Li completed the marathon in an impressive 2 hours, 35 minutes and 7 seconds, finishing 16th among the women’s field. Her performance qualified her for China’s National Marathon Championships, making her achievement even more remarkable. 

More Than Just a Marathon

The viral images sparked conversations worldwide about menstruation in sport. Many female athletes and health advocates praised Li for helping challenge the stigma surrounding periods, pointing out that menstruation is a normal part of life and should not prevent women from competing at the highest level. Others argued that her determination highlighted the physical and mental resilience required in elite endurance sports. 

Although the photos resurfaced online in 2026, false rumours claiming that Li had died during the race also began circulating. Those claims are completely false. Li safely finished the marathon and has continued her athletic career. 

A Performance to Remember

Li Meizhen’s marathon is remembered not because she experienced a period during the race, but because she refused to let an unexpected challenge define her performance. Her determination turned an ordinary sporting event into a story that inspired millions around the world.
