Joshua Andrew Donates Bone Marrow and Kidney to Save His Father — Twice

In a story that feels straight out of a movie, a young man from Southgate, North London, has given his father the ultimate gifts — not once, but twice. Joshua Andrew first saved his dad’s life as a teenager by donating bone marrow. Years later, he stepped up again with a kidney.68

A Father’s Battle with Cancer

Back around 2013, David Andrew was diagnosed with non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma. His teenage son Joshua became a bone marrow donor, and the transplant helped David beat the cancer. But the aggressive chemotherapy took a heavy toll, slowly destroying David’s kidneys over time. He later broke his neck in a cycling accident, adding even more challenges to his recovery.70

The Second Act of Heroism

Fast forward to late 2024. Joshua, then 23, was traveling in Australia when his family called with worrying news about his dad’s declining kidney function. Without hesitation, he flew home. Because of the earlier bone marrow donation, father and son already shared closely matching immune systems — making Joshua an ideal kidney donor too.68

In January 2025, Joshua donated one of his kidneys to David in a successful transplant at the Royal Free Hospital in London. Both came through the procedures well.70

A Bond Like No Other

When asked why he did it, Joshua kept it simple: “The main thing was that I knew I wanted to help my dad.” His donor coordinator put it perfectly: “He is only 23 and he has saved his dad not once, but twice.”74

David Andrew, now in his late 50s, and his son Joshua share an extraordinary father-son connection built on love, sacrifice, and resilience. Their story has inspired people worldwide, shining a light on the power of living organ donation and the quiet heroism that exists in families every day.

In a world that often highlights the negative, this is a powerful reminder of what family truly means.
