A Lightning Strike Changed His Life

In 1994, Dr. Tony Cicoria, an orthopaedic surgeon from New York, was struck by lightning while using a payphone outside a medical building. Witnesses said the powerful strike stopped his heart briefly before he was successfully revived.

Cicoria later described what he believed was an out-of-body experience, saying he felt as though he had watched the scene from above before returning to his body. Although he recovered physically, something unexpected happened just weeks later.

A Sudden Passion for Music

Before the lightning strike, Dr. Cicoria had no formal musical training and had never planned to become a composer.

After his recovery, he developed an intense fascination with piano music, particularly the works of Frédéric Chopin. He bought a piano, taught himself to play, and soon began composing original pieces.

He later explained that the melodies seemed to appear fully formed in his mind, as if they were being “downloaded.” His best-known composition became The Lightning Sonata.

A Medical Mystery

Dr. Cicoria’s remarkable transformation caught the attention of neurologists and researchers.

Renowned neurologist Oliver Sacks featured his story in the 2007 book Musicophilia: Tales of Music and the Brain. The case raised questions about whether brain trauma can trigger hidden creative abilities or alter the brain in unexpected ways.

Scientists have never reached a definitive explanation, making Cicoria’s experience one of the most unusual cases of acquired musical creativity ever documented.
