Woman’s Stomach Condition Cured After Doctors Prescribed Diet Coke

A woman suffering from severe stomach pain was successfully treated after doctors prescribed an unusual remedy—1.5 liters of Diet Coke a day. The soft drink helped dissolve a rare mass of undigested food in her stomach, allowing her to avoid major surgery.
The patient had been experiencing persistent abdominal pain, nausea, and discomfort. After carrying out medical examinations, doctors discovered she had developed a phytobezoar—a hardened mass made up of undigested plant fibers that had accumulated in her stomach. Although phytobezoars are uncommon, they can block the digestive tract and cause serious complications if left untreated.
Doctors Chose an Unusual Treatment
Rather than performing surgery immediately, the medical team decided to try a conservative treatment that has been documented in several medical studies. They instructed the woman to drink 1.5 liters of Diet Coke over two days.
The acidity and carbonation of cola drinks are believed to help soften and break down certain types of phytobezoars. This approach has been used successfully in a number of hospitals around the world, particularly when the blockage is caused by plant material.
The Treatment Worked
After just 48 hours, the hardened mass had broken down significantly. Doctors were then able to remove the remaining fragments using an endoscope—a flexible tube equipped with a camera and medical instruments—without the need for invasive surgery.
The successful outcome relieved the woman’s symptoms and allowed her to recover without undergoing a major operation.
Not a Home Remedy
Despite the surprising success of this case, medical experts emphasize that Diet Coke is not a cure for general stomach pain or digestive problems. The treatment is only recommended for carefully diagnosed cases of phytobezoars and should only be carried out under the supervision of healthcare professionals.
Anyone experiencing persistent abdominal pain, vomiting, or difficulty eating should seek medical attention rather than attempting to treat themselves with soft drinks.
Cases like this show how everyday products can sometimes have unexpected medical uses when backed by scientific evidence and used appropriately.
