Clara Paulino’s Tragic Death Inside a Police SUV

A routine afternoon turned into an unimaginable tragedy when Clara Paulino, the wife of a Miami police officer, became trapped inside the back of her husband’s patrol SUV. The heartbreaking accident highlighted a little-known danger of police vehicles designed to prevent detainees from escaping. 

How Clara Paulino Became Trapped

On August 21, 2020, 56-year-old Clara Paulino was at her family’s home in Miami Shores, Florida, while her husband, Officer Aristides Paulino, was asleep after working an overnight shift.

Investigators believe Clara entered the back seat of his marked police SUV to retrieve or look for something. At some point, the rear door closed behind her, activating the vehicle’s self-locking system. Because patrol vehicles are built with a security partition and rear doors that cannot be opened from the inside, she had no way to escape. She also did not have her phone with her to call for help. 

Hours in Extreme Heat

Clara remained trapped inside the SUV for approximately four hours as outside temperatures climbed above 90°F (32°C).

When her husband woke up and realized she was missing, he and one of their sons searched for her. They eventually found Clara unresponsive inside the patrol vehicle. She was pronounced dead at the scene. 

Investigation and Cause of Death

Authorities investigated the incident and concluded that it was a tragic accident.

An autopsy later determined that heat stroke caused Clara Paulino’s death. Officials said there was no evidence of foul play, though the case drew widespread attention because of the unusual circumstances surrounding her death.

Clara Paulino’s death shocked many people because few realize that the rear compartments of police patrol vehicles are designed to keep occupants from opening the doors themselves. In rare circumstances, those same security features can become deadly if someone becomes trapped inside.
