Celine Cremer: The Backpacker Who Vanished on a 45-Minute Hike
A 45-minute rainforest walk turned into one of Tasmania’s most heartbreaking missing person cases after Belgian backpacker Celine Cremer disappeared without a trace.
For more than two years, search teams found no evidence of what happened to the 31-year-old. Then, a volunteer search uncovered the first major clue that finally led investigators to the truth.
A Short Walk Into the Rainforest
On June 17, 2023, Celine Cremer parked her car at Philosopher Falls in northwest Tasmania and set off on a popular walking trail through the rainforest.
The hike usually takes less than an hour to complete. It attracts both locals and tourists because of its scenic waterfalls and lush forest.
Cremer, a Belgian backpacker, had been living in Tasmania for about six months. She planned to move to the Australian state of Victoria just days after the hike.
She never returned to her car.
Her Disappearance Sparked a Massive Search
Friends reported Cremer missing nine days later after they could no longer contact her.
By that time, the area had endured freezing temperatures, snow, and heavy rainfall. Medical experts told police that surviving for that long in such harsh conditions would have been extremely unlikely.
Authorities launched an extensive search that lasted two weeks. They used search crews, dogs, and helicopters, but they found no trace of her.
Additional searches over the next two years also failed to uncover any evidence.
It seemed as though she had simply vanished.
Friends Refused to Give Up
Cremer’s family and friends never accepted that the mystery would remain unsolved.
In December 2025, they organized an independent search party and returned to Philosopher Falls themselves.
During that search, volunteers discovered Cremer’s mobile phone near the falls. It was the first physical evidence linked to her disappearance since 2023.
The discovery renewed hope and prompted another official investigation.
The Discovery That Solved the Mystery
On January 28, 2026, a volunteer searcher found human remains in dense bushland near Philosopher Falls.
Police immediately joined the search and secured the area.
Investigators later recovered Cremer’s car keys from the nearby Arthur River, strengthening the connection between the remains and the missing backpacker.
On February 26, 2026, Tasmania Police confirmed that the remains had been provisionally identified as those of Celine Cremer.
What Investigators Believe Happened
Police believe Cremer became lost after leaving the walking trail.
Investigators think she accidentally dropped her phone, which prevented rescuers from locating her sooner.
Unable to find her way back through the dense rainforest, she likely became trapped in the remote wilderness and eventually died from exposure to the harsh weather conditions.
Authorities have found no evidence to suggest foul play.
A Tragic Ending to a Simple Hike
The trail Celine Cremer intended to complete takes only about 45 minutes.
Yet it took more than two and a half years before searchers finally discovered what happened to her.
Her disappearance serves as a powerful reminder that even short hikes can become dangerous when people venture into remote wilderness, where changing weather, difficult terrain, and dense vegetation can quickly turn a routine walk into a life-threatening situation.
