Braydon Smith: How an 11-Year-Old Fought Off an Armed Burglar During a Home Invasion 

An ordinary summer morning turned into a terrifying fight for survival when 11-year-old Braydon Smith came face-to-face with an armed burglar inside his family’s home. Trapped at gunpoint and fearing for his life, the North Carolina boy seized a split-second opportunity to fight back with a machete, forcing the intruder to flee.

The incident quickly made headlines across the United States, with many praising Braydon’s courage and quick thinking under unimaginable pressure.

A Home Invasion Gone Wrong

The incident occurred on the morning of June 14, 2019, in Mebane, North Carolina. Braydon was home alone when three people targeted the family’s house.

According to investigators, a woman knocked on the front door while a male accomplice climbed through a window. A third suspect remained outside in a waiting vehicle.

At the time, Braydon’s mother was speaking to him on the phone and unknowingly listened as the terrifying break-in unfolded.

Held at Gunpoint

After entering the house, the intruder found one of the homeowner’s pellet rifles and used it to threaten the young boy. He forced Braydon into a bedroom closet before leaving him there while he searched the house for valuables.

The burglar began collecting electronics and other items to steal. However, while grabbing Braydon’s phone from a nearby counter, he accidentally dropped it.

That brief distraction gave Braydon the opportunity he desperately needed.

Braydon Fights Back

Seeing the intruder’s attention shift, Braydon grabbed a nearby machete and struck the burglar on the back of the head.

The wounded suspect immediately turned and attacked the boy, kicking him in the stomach and on the side of the head. Braydon attempted to swing the machete again but missed.

Despite retaliating, the intruder had suffered a serious head wound and was bleeding heavily. He abandoned the stolen property and fled the house with his two accomplices.

Suspect Tracked Down

Police later identified the injured suspect as 19-year-old Jataveon Dashawn Hall. Shortly after the break-in, he arrived at a local hospital seeking treatment for his head injury.

Before officers could arrest him, Hall reportedly escaped the hospital wearing only a hospital gown and socks. Authorities later found him at his mother’s apartment in Burlington, North Carolina, following an anonymous tip.

He was arrested and charged with breaking and entering, second-degree kidnapping, assault on a child under 12, and several other related offenses.

A Father’s Advice Saved His Son

After the incident, Braydon revealed that his father had previously taught him what to do if someone ever broke into their home. The advice came after the family had experienced another burglary years earlier.

His father had told him that if an intruder entered the house and threatened his life, he should do whatever was necessary to protect himself.

Looking back on the terrifying ordeal, Braydon said he had no regrets about fighting back. He even stated that he would be prepared to defend himself again if the other two accomplices ever returned.

Fortunately, despite suffering minor injuries, Braydon survived the attack and was praised by both law enforcement and members of his community for his bravery during an incredibly dangerous situation.
