A Birthday Celebration That Ended in Tragedy

In December 2019, a heartbreaking case from Brighton, England, shocked people around the world.

Twenty-month-old Asiah Kudi was left alone in her family’s flat for almost six days while her mother, Verphy Kudi, travelled to celebrate her 18th birthday. During that time, she visited London, attended a concert, and later travelled to Coventry before returning home. 

On December 11, 2019, Verphy returned to the flat and found Asiah unresponsive. Emergency services rushed the toddler to the Royal Alexandra Children’s Hospital, but she was pronounced dead shortly after arriving. 

What Investigators Found

CCTV footage showed that Asiah had been left alone for five days, 21 hours and 58 minutes.

A post-mortem examination concluded that the little girl died from a combination of starvation and influenza. During sentencing, the judge described Asiah as a “helpless child” who depended entirely on her mother for care and said it was almost unbearable to imagine the suffering she endured. 

Investigators also discovered that this was not the first time Asiah had been left alone. Evidence presented in court showed that Verphy had previously left her daughter unattended on several occasions before the fatal incident. 

The Court’s Decision

In March 2021, Verphy Kudi pleaded guilty to manslaughter.

Later that year, on August 6, 2021, Lewes Crown Court sentenced her to nine years in prison. The court accepted that she had not intended to kill her daughter, but ruled that her actions amounted to gross negligence and directly caused Asiah’s death. 

A Case That Changed Child Protection Discussions

Asiah Kudi’s death sparked widespread public outrage and prompted reviews of child safeguarding procedures in Brighton. The case remains one of the UK’s most devastating examples of child neglect and continues to raise difficult questions about parental responsibility and protecting vulnerable children.
