The Unbreakable Spirit of Mary Vincent: A Survivor’s Tale

In 1978, 15-year-old Mary Vincent endured one of the most horrifying crimes imaginable and lived to tell her story. Her survival against all odds and her courage in seeking justice turned her into a symbol of resilience and strength. This is the shocking and inspiring true story of how Mary Vincent escaped death and brought her attacker to justice.
A Ride That Turned Into a Nightmare
Mary Vincent was a bright and ambitious teenager with dreams of becoming a dancer. One fateful September day, she decided to hitchhike from her home in Las Vegas to California. Along the way, she was picked up by Lawrence Singleton, a 50-year-old man who seemed like a harmless, kind individual. But behind his friendly demeanor lurked a monster.
Not long into the journey, Singleton took a detour, ignoring Mary’s protests. Realizing she was in danger, she tried to escape, but Singleton overpowered her. He sexually assaulted her multiple times, inflicting unimaginable trauma.
A Brutal Attempt to Silence Her
As dawn approached, Mary, exhausted and terrified, pleaded for her release. But Singleton had no intention of letting her go. Instead, he took a hatchet and severed both of her arms below the elbow in an attempt to eliminate any chance of her identifying him. As she lay bleeding, he threw her off a 30-foot cliff, believing she would die from her injuries.
But Mary refused to die.
A Miraculous Escape
Barely clinging to life, she pressed her bleeding stumps into the dirt, using mud to slow the blood loss. Despite excruciating pain and massive blood loss, she summoned every ounce of strength she had and climbed back up the cliff, determined to find help.
Completely naked, covered in blood, and in unimaginable pain, she walked for three miles before finally encountering a passing couple. They immediately rushed her to safety, and she was taken to a hospital, where doctors fought to save her life.
Justice and the Aftermath
Thanks to Mary’s bravery, Lawrence Singleton was caught and arrested. In court, she testified against him, making sure he would be held accountable. However, in a shocking miscarriage of justice, Singleton was sentenced to only 14 years in prison, the maximum sentence at the time.
Outraged, Mary and many others fought for legal changes, leading to the creation of new laws ensuring harsher penalties for violent offenders. After serving just eight years, Singleton was released early for “good behavior.” Tragically, years later, he murdered another woman, proving that Mary’s warnings about his danger to society had been correct.
A Symbol of Strength
Despite the horrors she endured, Mary Vincent refused to let her trauma define her. She went on to become an artist, using her talent to create stunning drawings despite her prosthetic arms. She also became an advocate for victims of violent crimes, using her story to inspire others and push for change.
